Juice Beauty is continually at the forefront of nontoxic beauty and advocacy. What is the latest with this important work?
Thank you for recognizing that Juice Beauty is at the forefront of this movement and we plan on staying a leader! Having the highest efficacy and highest organic content products is critically important to us as sustainability starts on the inside of the bottle with the ingredients. Greatly limiting pesticide use is crucial for the health of our planet, our animals, our waterways and all of us! We have estimated that over the last decade, Juice Beauty has avoided the use of 3 tons of pesticides by using organic ingredients.
We are also furthering our packaging initiatives. We reduced the footprint of our kits and saved 2.6 mm square inches of paper in just one year. We have moved to bio-resin tubes to reduce carbon off-gassing and more. For a complete picture, see here.
How do you see the connection between beauty, health and wellness, and how does that translate into Juice’s products and your company’s ethos?
Juice Beauty is rooted in wellness and fitness as I started one of the first wellness companies in the country in the early 1980’s and spent two decades building it focused on research and development in fitness, wellness and nutrition. This provided the foundation for Juice Beauty. I then developed a keen interest in personal care products during my pregnancy with my first child at the age of 40. Experiencing hormonal changes and the beginning of lines in my skin, I wanted to find healthy skincare solutions that delivered visible results. Although, according to some studies, the skin absorbs over 60% of what is placed on it, there were very few available healthy personal care products that worked well and I wanted to create meaningful change in the beauty industry. Years after my second child was born, I bought the name “Juice Beauty” in 2004 and launched the company from scratch in 2005. Every aspect of Juice Beauty is rooted in wellness and environmentalism (and of course efficacy meeting or exceeding conventional chemical brands) as we never compromise our values.
Why was it important to you for Juice to create sunscreen products, and BB and CC products with SPF in them?
Juice Beauty was the first (or tied with Chanel) to market with CC Creams and we were also one of the first to market zinc + organic ingredients. Blocking UVA/UVB sun rays is critical for skin cancer prevention and wrinkle prevention and premature aging of the skin. It took years to get zinc to be light enough for a smooth application on the face and it also took years to get 7 shades that blend with very light to very dark skin tones. Zinc is extremely hard to get the right tints for darker skin tones but we did it! Our Stem Cellular CC spf 30 cream in 7 shades now rank in the top NPD sales nationwide! We have matched the beautiful application of silicones and dimethicones instead using grapeseed and coconut alkanes.
How do you integrate sun safety into your beauty routine and why is this important to you?
- Cleanse 2. Serum 3. Moisturizer 3. CC spf Moisturizer….so in the am, after cleansing, I apply either our Stem Cellular Booster or Green Apple Age Defy Serum, then either our Stem Cellular or Green Apple Moisturizer, then Stem Cellular SPF 30 in my shade–Desert Glow. Since we don’t use synthetic dyes—the plant pigments really can blend across multiple skin tones. Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s, I was the original sun bunny…. right through the 1980’s. So I had 3 decades of nonstop sun exposure being an athlete and had so much sun damage all over my face, neck and decollete. I have prevented further sun damage with our Stem Cellular SPF 30 sunscreens and our SPF Sport 80 minute water resistant ‘all over’ sunscreen; and I have reversed my terrible hyper-pigmentation and sun spots with our Green Apple Peels and Green Apple Age Defy Serum.
How can we encourage our loved ones to be mindful of their sun exposure?
SPF every morning rain or shine and in all seasons—and preferably Zinc + Organic ingredients spf. And hats hats hats!
