What is your background and what inspired you to become a makeup artist?
I was born and raised in Australia, lived my life in the sun! I moved to Los Angeles in 2007 to continue my career as a makeup artist. I have been here ever since. I started in theatre in Australia and then moved into film and television and then into the world of fashion, beauty and celebrity. I became increasingly interested in being a personal makeup artist to celebrities and that is why I moved to the states. I have been a celebrity makeup artist here for 13 years and have loved every minute of it.
You lead beauty looks for cover shoots and red carpet events for your clients. What is the process like for deciding which direction to go in for highly publicized events?
We work in a team. The looks are set, by us all discussing what the talent is wearing to start off with, and then we all ( stylist, hair and makeup artist) share references of ideas we have for the look then we decide as a team what to do. Every team is different but we all respect each other and each others ideas, we know when to push a look and when to keep things simple and chic.
You see a lot of skin up close. How have you seen sun damage?
I have seen some sun damage but not as much with the clients I work with. They are all so aware of the damages the sun can have on their skin and really protect themselves. I always use SPF on my clients too so they are covered anyway to make sure I am doing my part to take care of their skin.
How do you think sun safety is an important element of health and beauty?
I think it is has become an integral part of the beauty routine, especially now that it is abundantly clear of the damage the sun can have on our skin. SPF has been built into so many products as well to protect the consumer. I had a skin cancer removed a few years ago, so it is a very important part of my beauty routine and I make it a big part of my clients too.
How do you integrate sun safety into your beauty routine?
I wear an organic Sunscreen SPF50+ every day. I apply it after my moisturizer and then I use a foundation that also has an SPF factor in it.
I apply SPF all over my chest as well. Now we are going into Summer I am using it everywhere!!! I love Lullaby Skincare’s Sunscreen for delicate skin SPF 50+ for myself, my kids and my clients as well as Elta MD UV Daily Broad-Spectrum SPF 40
